I get this question a lot. Why do I need to hire someone to set an outdoor movie for my party if I can actually do it myself and save money? My answer is "Yes" you can, but do you really want to? Let me explain.
Because you are presenting your movie outside and there is always some light, in order to have a crystal clear image you expect the projector you purchase should be very bright. Your projector's brightness is measured in lumens. At 3,000+ lumens you really increase the power of the projector and it becomes possible to start the movie shortly after sunset instead of waiting another 30-40 minutes for it to get much darker. These projectors will cost you around $800. See an example here.
Even though you can get a away with some light colored fabric the image will be much brighter and of better quality if you use an actual screen, which depending on the size will cost over $300. There are also speakers which depending on quality can cost $300 and up. How you need to make sure you have all the cabling including power extensions. All these equipment will need to be stored and maintained.
It will take about 30 min to set up and about the same time to take down this equipment.
If you are hosting these movie nights only a few times a year, it may or may not be appealing to you and your family.
When you plan an event and have to take care of the food, decorations and million other things to take care of your guests and create a unique, unforgettable experience, you typically want to minimize the number of things you have to think about.
We will take care of all the equipment and its setup for an entire weekend for a flat $200 fee, and did I mention the pop-corn machine will be on us as well.
