Learn Professional Tips to a Perfect Outdoor Movie Event

Part 1: Equipment

Optoma HD142X 1080p 3000 Lumens 3D DLP Home Theater Projector
There is something magical about watching a movie, sporting event or a slide show under the stars. No matter how many times I do that I can’t help but smile. No matter the occasion it is guaranteed to be a special, unforgettable evening for your family and guests of all ages.
Most importantly planning for hours of this incredible entertainment doesn’t have to be overly complicated.
As an owner of my business Outdoor Cinema Events LLC I have hosted numerous outdoor movie events for my customers as well as family and friends. In this series of articles I want to share the experience I have gained so anyone interested can enjoy professional quality movie experience under the stars.
With outdoor movies in your backyard or a company get together the options are endless and aren’t just limited to outdoor movie themed birthday parties for your children:
  • Video Game Nights
  • Karaoke Nights
  • Slideshows
  • Sporing Events (think pay-per-view boxing, UFC, NBA playoffs, MLB, Soccer, NFL, etc
I put together a set of free guides that provides all the details:
  • What equipment is needed
  • How to set it up
  • Food & Snacks
  • Decorations, etc

In this first part of the series we will cover a complete list of all the professional level quality equipment you will need to purchase or rent

  • Projector
  • Screen
  • Speakers
  • BlueRay (laptop, ipad, or any other source from which you will play your media)

Let's Discuss Each one is some detail.

Projector
These are some important factors to look for in a projector that you will be using outdoors:

  1. HD = 1920 x 1080 pixels
  2. Brightness 2,000 lumens or better
  3. Look for projectors that support DEEP Color or say they are HDMI 1.3a (or above) compliant.
  4. You also want a projector with long lamp life and overall reliability and ease of use.
  5. This is a projector I recommend and use for my clients that fits above criteria perfectly:
Optoma HD142X 1080p 3000 Lumens 3D DLP Home Theater Projector
It an exception projector that can be used outdoors and very well priced.

Screen
For outdoor screens that are easy to use, provide great quality and stand the test of time I look no further than Elite Screens Yard Master 2
You can select the size you want as well as choice between front or rear projection.
The front projection is when the projector is positioned in the front of the screen and work in most settings. There are cases such as when a screen is position in front of a pool when rear projection screens will be our only choice. Rear projection screens offer other advantages simply because of the fact that all of the wiring will be hidden behind the screen. So as long as we have some space behind the screen (16 to 20 ft) this is a great option.
I have worked with this company for many years and they provide great quality product with excellent support.

Speakers
Here my recommendation is to get speaker system that is powerful with a lot of connection options and built in amplifier.
You can’t do much better than this set

PRORECK PARTY 15 Portable 15-Inch 2000 Watt 2-Way Powered PA Speaker System

This speaker system offers good sound quality even at high volumes and super simple to set up.

If you are on the budget and don’t need a very powerful sound that comes with speakers that have a built in amplifier. There is a lower priced option that will work very well:
Yamaha NS-AW350B All-Weather Indoor/Outdoor 2-Way Speakers

These speakers also have an added benefit of being weather resistant, so it will work well in an outdoor setting.

Media Player
Here the options are wide open, whether it’s a laptop, a blue-ray player or Apple TV as long as you have a capability to play or stream the media of your choice.
I use Sony BDPS3700 Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi  here you have an option to stream of Netflix or other service online, play your blue-ray disks or DVDs in HD. This is a great reliable product for a very reasonable price.

Cabling
In order to connect all of our equipment we need to cabling. Here is the list:

  • Blue-Ray to Projector:
    • Here all you will need is HDMI cable which you can easily purchase anywhere.
  • Blue-Ray to Speakers:
    • Here you will need two types of cables and an adapter to connect them.
      • Digital Audio Coax
      • RCA - I would buy a longer cable since you may have a significant distance between your speakers and a Blue-Ray player
      • Adapter - Digital to analog audio converter

  • If you want to connect your laptop or phone to speakers all you need is an Male Mini Plug to 2 Female RCA Jack Adapter Audio Y Cable or alternatively you can purchase Stereo Male To Dual RCA Female Adapter which works exactly the same way.
  • Alternatively you can also connect your speakers to projector’s audio output port using the same RCA jack adapters above.
  • Connecting your laptop or phone to your projector will require an adapter as well since your laptop or phone will not have an HDMI port. Here I will use iphone and MacBook as an example.
  • For your iPhone
    • Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter
  • For your MacBook
    • Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt) to HDMI Adapter
  • You will need a couple of power strips with surge protection
  • A couple of power extension cords

Why Hire a Professional?
Can you run our outdoor movie or presentation yourself? Sure. But consider the cost of equipment which can be well over $1K even if you decide to buy modest equipment. Also consider the storage and maintenance of that equipment if you do not plan to use it on a regular basis. The setup of wiring and equipment takes some time to figure out as well as time every time you need to set it and take it away.
As an alternative, you can contact Outdoor Cinema Events LLC and for $289 we will deliver and setup everything you need for a great outdoor movie weekend, including an awesome professional outdoor screen, bright HD projector, exceptional sound system, BluRay player and adapters that allow you to connect smart devices and stream your favorite content.
If you are interested to have an outdoor movie night, sporting event or any other presentation but may not want to purchase the equipment and go through the setup and takedown process we would gladly do it all for you and for a very affordable price.
All you would have to do is gather your family and friends under the stars and enjoy.
